For over 25 years, hundreds of recent graduates and students have participated in the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Graduate Fellowship Program (NGFP). Fellows have successfully secured career opportunities within NNSA or the greater national security community. The NGFP fellowship is a career gateway that can provide you:

Key Program Dates
Applications for fellowships open in March 2023 and will be accepted online through Monday, October 2, 2023. The fellowship will run from June 2024 to June 2025. Positions and Compensation
The NGFP offers more than 70 positions annually, typically in areas of nuclear security and nonproliferation policy and technology, national security research and development, and business and project management. Positions are available in a variety of locations and responsibilities vary by assignment.

  • Annual Salary ($62,900 for students pursuing master’s or PhD degrees, $73,900 for post-docs).
  • $4,000 hiring incentive (taxed).
  • 3 weeks of vacation annually, accrued weekly.
  • Additional travel and training funding ($10,000).
  • Tuition reimbursement – up to $13,000 annually (restrictions apply).
  • Earn Professional Development Units (PDU).
  • Comprehensive benefits package.

Program Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Candidates must have the ability to obtain a future security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Be currently enrolled in a graduate degree or doctorate program at the time of application or have graduated within 18 months prior to the application deadline.
  • Have minimum 3.0 GPA in degree/doctorate program (final or current cumulative).
  • Available to work full time for the duration of the one-year fellowship (beginning in June)

That’s one reason candidates from a variety of academic backgrounds are successful in this fellowship, including those with degrees in: Chemical Sciences, Engineering Management, Electrical and Computer, Engineering, Finance/Project Management, Industrial and Systems Engineering, International Relations, Master’s of Business Administration (MBA), Material Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nonproliferation Studies, Nuclear Science and Engineering, Physics, Political Science, Project Management, Public Administration, Public Policy, Radiation/Health Physics, Radiochemistry, and Security Studies.

About the NNSA
Established by Congress in 2000, NNSA is a semiautonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), a DOE national laboratory, administers the NGFP for NNSA. Fellows are not federal employees; they are contractually employed by PNNL and work on-site at DOE/NNSA locations.
