A Career Exploration and Planning Tool for the Humanities and Social Sciences

Imagine PhD: Self-Assessment, Explore Options, Narrow Options, Make a PlanImaginePhD is a free online career exploration and planning tool that helps PhD students in the humanities and social sciences explore a range of non-academic professions. The tool was created by experts from over 50 universities in the Graduate Career Consortium (GCC), a professional network of administrators from graduate career planning and professional development offices across the United States.

A similar tool, myIDP, exists for students in STEM fields.

ImaginePhD’s Content

ImaginePhD is designed to meet the need “for more resources to help bridge the knowledge gap between doctoral education and the realm of career possibilities.” The tool allows users to:

  • Assess their career-related skills, interests, and values
  • Explore careers paths appropriate to their disciplines
  • Create self-defined goals
  • Map out next steps for career and professional development success

The website also curates general resources of tips, strategies, and guidelines for developing job search documents and navigating the job application process.
