Public interest technology (PIT) refers to the study and application of technology expertise to advance the public interest, generate public benefits, and promote the public good. Join Graduate Center alumni Erin Rose Glass and Lisa Tagliaferri as they discuss their journeys from the GC’s English and Comp Lit PhD programs to Chainguard, a company working to make open-source software less of a security risk.

Erin Rose Glass is a researcher and educator focused on open source software, digital infrastructure, and critical approaches to new technologies.  She received her PhD in English from The CUNY Graduate Center and believes the arts and humanities are critical to shaping our digital future. Currently, she works as a product manager at Chainguard, a software supply chain security start up. Previously, she led the Developer Education team at DigitalOcean, where she helped create and maintain free educational materials on open source software development for millions of visitors a month. Before joining industry, she served as the Digital Scholarship Librarian at UC San Diego, where she founded and directed KNIT, a non-commercial digital commons (with 2,400+ users) for UC San Diego, the San Diego Community College District, and San Diego State University.

Lisa Tagliaferri is Senior Director of Developer Enablement at Chainguard, a venture-backed startup with the mission of securing the software supply chain. An interdisciplinary researcher in tech and the humanities, Dr. Tagliaferi was recently a Visiting Scholar at Rutgers University, and also held postdoctoral fellowships at MIT and Harvard University’s Villa I Tatti. Dr. Tagliaferri holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, an MSc in Computer Science from Queen Mary University of London, and is currently working on an edited volume on Navigating Digital Humanities Beyond the Ivory Tower as part of the Debates in Digital Humanities series published by the University of Minnesota Press.

This event is made possible through support from the Public Interest Technology University Network Challenge Fund, a project under the aegis of the New Venture Fund. Generous backing from esteemed entities like the Ford Foundation, Hewlett Foundation, Mastercard Impact Fund via Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, Schmidt Futures, and The Siegel Family Endowment fuels the Public Interest Technology University Network’s challenge as well as career fair grants.
