How to request a letter of recommendation
What if letters of recommendation need to uploaded to separate website?
Some institutions require that letter writers upload and submit their letters through an online application system. You provide the writers’ email addresses, and they receive a confidential link to upload their letters to the application website.
Interfolio makes it possible for you to avoid bothering your letter writers every time you want to apply for another opportunity. Once a writer has uploaded a letter in your Interfolio dossier account, Interfolio can will then upload the letters directly to online application systems. When you’re asked to provide your letter writer’s email address, simply enter an Interfolio-generated email address (“document email address”. More info here.
Is it safe to put so much private information out there on the internet?
Interfolio is FERPA compliant, meaning that it is obligated to protect the privacy of student education records. To do so, the company uses multiple layers of encryption and safeguards to protect confidential documents. Digital backups are stored at a secure, off-site location.
Can the Graduate Center manage my confidential documents for me instead?
Alumni might recall that the GC used to maintain an in-house dossier service within the Student Services office. Staff members would manage letters of recommendation and send them out, for a fee. The GC has phased this service out now that online services have become the norm.
If you’d prefer not to use an online dossier service, you can go the more traditional route and send hard copies of your applications by mail. Do make sure that you provide all letter writers with pre-addressed and stamped envelopes so that all they need to do is print their letters and drop them in a mailbox.
