Information Session: ACLU Fall 2024 Placements

Date & Time
Friday, May 24, 2024
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm ET

Location
Virtual Zoom Event

For more than one hundred years, ACLU lawyers have been at the center of one history-making court case after another, participating in more Supreme Court cases than any other private organization. With attorneys nationwide, they handle thousands of cases each year on behalf of clients whose rights have been violated.

Representatives will be on-hand to discuss their organization and two placement opportunities for Fall 2024 (described below). These placements are open to current graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.

Selected students will be encouraged to enroll in IDS 81620: Scholarly Praxis at Work in the World, which allows students to earn academic credit for their work.

Position Descriptions

Students would work remotely with ACLU’s Strategy Office headquartered in New York City. The Strategy Office is charged with ensuring that the ACLU works in a coordinated way to protect and advance civil rights and civil liberties in the United States. Working across departments and across issues, the Strategy Office guides the planning, research, and evaluation of ACLU’s work.

Role 1

Research & Evaluation Project: Project that helps ACLU national and affiliate staff build their capacity to conduct impactful research and/or effectively evaluate ACLU’s legal, advocacy, and/or public education efforts. This position requires basic knowledge of research methods and analysis, and comfort conducting literature reviews. We encourage students to bring their expertise in one or more of ACLU’s current priority issue areas: voting rights, transgender justice, reproductive freedom, immigration rights, and racial justice.  This role would work closely with ACLU”s Director of Research and engage with other key members of the Strategy Office

Role 2

Election Strategy Project: Project that supports the implementation of ACLU’s strategies to safeguard the election and planning for election outcomes. Areas of focus could include battleground states, ballot access, get out the vote, and election integrity. Students with interest and background in voting rights or democracy protections might find this particularly interesting. This role would work closely with key members of the Strategy Office.
