IBM Business Performance Services FAQs

Who do we look for? Do we require previous consulting experience?
An ideal candidate would be a team player, have high affinity for data analytics, and possess problem solving, leadership, and stakeholder management skills. We consider and hire candidates who do not have previous consulting experience. As such, our team consists of people from diverse professional and educational backgrounds. We look for a combination of professional skills, character traits, and a track record of achievement that indicates a strong foundation to build the analytical expertise and change management ability required to become a successful strategy consultant.

How do we support professional development?
BPS leadership team encourages consultants to take advantage of IBM’s development programs and invests a great deal of time ensuring that each consultant receives guidance in developing his or her skills to advance within the company. Consultants meet regularly with their project and development managers for skills assessment, performance feedback and career planning. Bi-monthly, all team members are invited to participate in skill development workshops.

What is a typical BPS career path?
Consultants typically develop within BPS for 3 to 4 years and move on to leadership roles within IBM’s operating units in Sales, Operation, Strategy, Business Development, Finance, or Market Intelligence. Many BPS alumni are successful leaders in areas of their interest in IBM.

Where is BPS located and what travel is expected?
The central BPS office is located at the IBM Corporate Headquarters in Armonk, NY, just north of New York City. Typical travel involves visiting IBM campuses within short driving distance of Armonk. Rarely, a project may require international travel.
