When you finish your graduate degree, you’ll probably either stay in academia or work for a large pharmaceutical company, right? The other options that come to mind are usually non-research positions in consulting or science policy. However, small startup companies are an exciting alternative that blend several advantages of academia and larger-scale industry. In this session, Catherine Hofler will talk about her experiences working at a small biotech start-up company, Emerald Therapeutics, starting at the very early days of the company, and her transition from academia to this new environment. She will also discuss how to explore job opportunities in the biotech and biodesign sectors, especially here in NYC.

About Our Speaker

Catherine has a BS in Biological Sciences from Carnegie Mellon University and a PhD in Genetics from Yale University. While at Yale, she worked in the lab of Michael Koelle, studying how G-protein signaling changes the behavior of C. elegans when they are hungry versus well-fed — in other words, the molecular mechanisms of being hangry. Catherine is currently the Director of Research at Emerald Therapeutics, a small biotech start-up company working towards developing antiviral nanotechnologies.
